Hi, our names are Julianna Tompkins and Sierra Harris and we are seniors and best friends that were assigned an advocacy project in our High School Health Classes.  We didn't really know what to do for our projects at first. We started thinking about things that could not only help our school but help our community as well. Then it came to us, we were thinking about how we have both been affected by substance abuse in our families. We wanted to raise awareness for not only the abuser but the abuser’s family too. Our goal is to raise money to get Chris Herren a former NBA basketball player from the Boston Celtics and also a former substance abuser to come speak at our High School for our school and community. Chris Herren runs a project called The Herren Project. The Herren Project’s goal is to make good choices and help others get on the right road to recovery and to keep young adults away from addictive substances. We are organizing a 3k walk/run at James Baird Park on the 20th of January 2019 and 100% of the proceeds from this event will be going to our school's Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D) program. The S.A.D.D program helps raise proceeds to bring The Herren Project to our school for our community, but unfortunately the S.A.D.D program has not raised nearly enough money to bring The Herren Project back this year. This is why we feel the need to help our school and our community. We hope you are interested in helping us out with our project.
